Reflections on Suicide Research: Challanges, Opportunities, Moral Imperatives / Reflectii asupra cercetarii in comportamentul suicidar: provocari, oportunitati, imperative morale - Gabriel Diaconu

Abstract:

I entered the field of suicidology with a belief that suicide is a not-so-well known phenomenon, and not-so-well known phenomena are a puzzle to be deciphered by the scientist. Answers should be found. Explanations should be given. A model of reality should then lead to a theory of suicide. It became quickly apparent, though, that I had been naïve. In order to review the progress in the field, this paper will offer a birds-eye view on the topic of suicidal behavior as seen through the eyes of the investigator, the difficulties to parcel out various sources of knowledge, as well as the moral imperatives that govern a otherwise deep domain of psychiatry. The main take-home message, at the end of the lecture, is that suicidality, in its entirety, is a field worthy of exploration for the psychiatrist, rich in nuances and much more complex than a simple disorder of mind. Neither good nor bad are the colors that shape it, the byproduct of events that lie not only with the suicidal, but with its keen, its family, and the community whence he came.

Rezumat:

Am intrat în domeniul suicidologiei cu credinţa că suicidul este un fenomen nu foarte bine înţeles, iar astfel de fenomene sunt un puzzle de descifrat pentru omul de ştiinţă. Ar trebui să găsim răspunsuri. Ar trebui să oferim explicaţii. Ar trebui, ulterior, să formulăm un model care să reflecte cel mai bine realitatea, iar apoi să conducă la o teorie despre suicid. A devenit aparent rapid, totuşi, că eram un naiv. Pentru o bună revizie a progresului în acest domeniu, articolul oferă o privire de ansamblu, narativă, asupra comportamentului suicidar văzut prin ochii investigatorului, dificultăţile de a integra diverse surse de cunoaştere, şi de asemenea, de a identifica imperativele care guvernează o arie altfel intens profundă a psihiatriei. La final principalul mesaj de reţinut pentru cititor ar trebui sa fie că suicidalitatea, în intregimea ei, este un domeniu demn de explorare pentru psihiatrii, bogată în nuanţe şi mult mai complexă decât o simplă cale finală a tulburării mintale. Nici bune, nici rele, sunt culorile care o formează, rezultanta a evenimente care ţin nu doar de suicidar, dar şi semenii săi, familia, şi comunitatea din care face parte.
